Victory Day, 2004

Brest Fortress

May 09,2004 in Brest Fortress (BF) was nice, sunny warm weather with short spells of rain. Here you see some glimpses of the remarkable day, any pic you can enlarge, just click it. Here we go!

This alley leads to the BF.

Relief portraits of war heroes.

Walking to BF with the own national flag is new in Brest.

The moats around the 19-century Fortress look more like ponds in a splendid park.

Kids by the moat found also something of interest.

Many people were seen in BF, both young and old. The Main Entrance leads to the largest eastern island. BF has 4 islands.

From the Main Entrance to the Citadel.
Tanks arrested kids' imagination, they are ready to crawl around the big iron giants till night.
Citadel, red brick barracks dating back to the 1840s. Sculpture "Thirst" reminds of the lack of water in the hot June 1940 and many other ordeals that befell the defenders who fought back the out numbering enemy day and night.
Here the Mukhovets river splits off in two branches.
Marvelous river banks, it's hard to believe that is a place where wars raged three times, in 1915, 1939, 1941. To the left southern island, to the right Citadel can be seen.
Citadel. Red brick Russian barracks, dating back to the 1840s.
Southern island. Church ruins, dating back to the 18th century
Southern island. Off the beaten paths, the best place for  lovers of nature and photography.
Kholm Gate is nice. It is the emblem of the Fortress. It leads from the southern island to the Citadel.
Citadel, kids are mastering gunnery.
Citadel, the eternal flame is the sacred place to commemorate thousands of known and unknown heroes who defended BF in summer 1941.
